I had the pleasure of doing a bit of work for the Student-Farmworker Alliance for my master’s practicum. I learned about the situation of farmworkers in Florida from a 2003 article by John Bowe in the New Yorker: “Nobodies: Does Slavery Exist in America?” (download PDF). You may be surprised, but U.S. Department of Justice is still prosecuting slavery cases. The Student-Farmworker Alliance and Interfaith Action are now looking for interns to live and work in Immokalee, Florida, from January to May, 2009.
Want to do some hands-on organizing? Dig Paolo Freire’s philosophy? Then you will love the way these folks operate. Interns will work alongside farmworkers and allies organizing around the Coalition of Immokalee Workers‘ Campaign for Fair Food. Applications are due December 15th. More information on the Student-Farmworker Alliance website.
